Field Guide : American Avocet
Field Guide : American Avocet
Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.
When you get low in the bay mud, pickle weed, and saltgrass, you’re afforded (extra) close encounters of the bird kind. In the Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area, I’ve had American avocets alight just a few yards from where I lie, gracing me with their elongated elegance. If they spot the muddy ape ogling them, the leggy shorebirds take flight and voice their displeasure with a series of shrill “kee” calls. If they don’t notice me, they lean forward and high step through the tidal flats, aggressively sweeping their long bills side to side through the mud to capture aquatic invertebrates. With just five colors, the avocet’s “Field Guide” column is refined simplicity. The peachy bronze of the breeding avocet’s head and neck; the powder blue of their legs; the blue-tinged pearl – my, oh, my. I’ll never tire of watching these remarkable shorebirds.
Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).
Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
