Field Guide : Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon Race, Male)
Field Guide : Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon Race, Male)
Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.
The dark-eyed junco is common across much of temperate North America, but the bird varies in marked ways throughout its range. There’s enough variation that Wikipedia’s entry on this vocal little bird notes “its systematics are still not completely untangled.” Fair enough, although honest taxonomists will admit that’s true for *all* species to one degree or another – it’s just particularly obvious when you have a species like the dark-eyed junco, which is further divided into at least 15 subspecies/races and ecotypes. All this variation has evolved since the last Ice Age, just 15,000 years ago, but the plumage differences are striking. This Field Guide color column depicts a male of the Oregon race, specifically Junco hyemalis oreganus, my western “yard bird” variation.
Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).
Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
