Field Guide : Horned Puffin

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

The horned puffin is a remarkable and charismatic sea bird of the North Pacific. I’ve encountered these puffins during trips to coastal Alaska, but I also had the pleasure of seeing one near the Farallon Islands, off the coast of California. Although most folks describe all three species of puffin as “cute” – they do make great stuffies! – they’re actually egg-shaped athletes. They fly far from shore, well beyond the continental shelf, and dive hundreds of feet below the surface to hunt small fish. While the “horned” of the common name refers to the dark, fleshy protuberance that breeding adults grow above the eye, it also evokes the bird’s most common call, which sounds like a cross between a car horn and a revving chain saw. So, next time someone tells you puffins are cute, let them know they’re *also* grunting, honking torpedoes.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
