Field Guide : Mountain Bluebird (Male)

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

You may have heard that the Twitter logo features a mountain bluebird, but the record doesn’t entirely support that. The British designer whose stock photo became the company’s placeholder mascot in 2006 liked the shade of blue he chose for his bird, but he wasn’t actually referencing a thrush species of the American west. Still, when the logo received an update a year later, a new designer created a cartoonish bird with a sky-blue back and a powder-blue belly, making it appear even more mountain bluebird-like. It wasn’t until a much later redesign, though, that folks involved in the process said the mountain bluebird served as inspiration. Then again, they also said they were thinking of a hummingbird, so…..it’s complicated. But, hey, so is taxonomy!

Note how distinct *this* bluebird species is from the other two North American bluebird species, the Western (Sialia mexicana) and Eastern bluebird (S. sialis). They’re all predominantly “blue birds,” but whereas the Western and Eastern birds are subtly distinct, the mountain bluebird really perches apart.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
