Field Guide : Red-shouldered Hawk

$36.00

Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.

There are red-shouldered hawks and there are *red* red-shouldered hawks. The Buteo lineatus elegans subspecies that I see almost daily here in California is generally considered to be the reddest of the red-shouldered hawk subspecies, especially when compared to the pale-headed Florida variety (B. l. extimus). That being the case, I was surprised to discover that dark chocolate dominates, followed closely by cream and a light coffee brown. Only then do we get down to the reddish-orange. Naturally, when we take in the bird itself, our eyes are drawn to the brighter, more vibrant plumage and rusty shoulder epaulettes, but, viewed in profile, those are more the raptor’s fancy fringe.

Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).

Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
